On a personal note…
Sarah’s journey did not start in counseling. She was a college soccer player and had no idea what she wanted to do after graduation. (Un)fortunately, she suffered a career ending injury at the beginning of her junior year and was no longer able to play. She started to transition from player to coach. She was a student assistant for her college team and a youth coach. After graduating, she continued coaching youth sports and then had an opportunity to coach and teach. She quickly got certified in Special Education, took a job as an assistant coach at a local high school, and then became a head coach. It was during this time that she was introduced to counseling. One of her players had told her she had attempted to end her life by suicide. She was thankful that she was unsuccessful, but wondered, what did she miss? She continued to coach for a few more years, but she really wanted to understand what would cause a person to feel so lost. She made what she considers the best decision of her life and career, and enrolled in graduate school to become a counselor.
Why Counseling?
Sarah has always been a team player. She played sports, coached teams, and worked in education. All of those require her to work within a group of people. Counseling, on the other hand, is nothing like a team. It is individual and personal. It’s one on one rather than large numbers of people. That is what she enjoys most. Working with one person, to help them go through their journey, is very meaningful for her. Counseling can be challenging. But nothing is more satisfying than helping someone overcome, move forward, learn a new skill or just be able to be at peace.
