Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder more commonly known as PTSD is a term that gets tossed around quite a bit. What’s lesser known is how to treat PTSD, or if PTSD is even treatable. The good news is that PTSD is treatable! Trauma therapists typically treat PTSD in 3 phases. I share a little bit about those phases in this post so that you know what to expect when you come in for PTSD treatment with a PTSD therapist in Houston, TX.
What is the best type of therapy to recover from PTSD?
Jennifer enters my office in tears. She has been through five therapists already - none of whom helped her feel better. She has talked to therapists who taught her breathing techniques, and some therapists who had her recount her past trauma in painful detail. However, it wasn’t until she found my couch, that her experience was different. Together we figured out how she could feel safe in her body for the first time. If you have been through trauma, your body learns to be on high alert and has trouble feeling safe. Doing trauma therapy with me, little by little, Jennifer’s PTSD symptoms lessened.
Why do online therapy in Texas?
At Wilson Counseling, we have been doing online therapy in Texas for a long time, but the Covid-19 pandemic really sped up the process of online therapy becoming mainstream. In fact, we see a large number of clients who prefer to do online counseling rather than come into our physical counseling office location in Houston, TX. Who can blame them? There are so many benefits to doing online therapy.
Reduce STRESS Through Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)
If you are feeling anxious, I think this exercise will be really helpful to you, This blog post will help you learn to do an exercise for relaxation called progressive muscle relaxation. Progressive muscle relaxation is an exercise that can help relax your mind and your body by tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups throughout your body We usually start in the forehead and go all the way down to your toes. You will tense each muscle for about five seconds and then you'll slowly release You'll notice that this creates kind of a wave of relaxation in your body. When your body is stressed or anxious it tends to tense up. Progressive muscle relaxation will help you lessen the tension in order to feel more relaxed.
How do I know my orientation?
In a world where heterosexual male/female relationships are the norm, it can be very difficult to figure out your sexual orientation. Add in factors like family expectations, values you’ve had since you can remember, and religious/societal views it can be enough to make your head spin! In order to decide your sexual orientation first, it may be helpful for us to define some terms that you may not have heard before. Most of us know that the acronym LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender, and Questioning/Queer. but what do all those letters that come after mean anyway? The plus is an ever-growing list of other orientations to fit everyone’s uniqueness!
